With more than 80 years of combined experience in education, Dr. and Mrs. Langley are passionate about making education accessible and preparing future leaders in teaching, administration, and health care.

Mrs. Langley earned degrees from the University of South Carolina, the University of Southern California, and The Citadel, and served as principal of Macedonia Middle School for nearly three decades. She was named South Carolina’s Middle School National Principal of the Year (2007) and Berkeley County Principal of the Year (2009–2010). A dedicated mentor, she has guided countless teachers and administrators throughout her career and continues to support schools across Berkeley County.

Dr. Langley earned multiple degrees, including a Doctor of Education and Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina. He served as chair of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Department of Health and Human Performance for over a decade, overseeing its growth from fewer than 60 students to more than 800. An accomplished scholar and author, he is recognized for his leadership in administration and legal issues in health and exercise science.

Through the Dr. Thomas D. and Janie L. Langley Scholarship, they extend their lifelong commitment to education by supporting students pursuing careers in exercise science.

To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:

• Student must be a South Carolina resident
• Student must be a declared exercise science major
• Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher

Dr. William R. Barfield is a beloved and admired professor emeritus at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø who has dedicated his professional life to teaching and research. Prior to his career at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, which began in 1994, Dr. Barfield shared his love of teaching, coaching and physical education at Brevard College and The Citadel. In 1996, he began conducting research in partnership with the Medical University of South Carolina. Since joining the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, he has engaged in important and significant research resulting in over 150 articles and book chapters.

Dr. Barfield’s active interest and significant contributions to the musculoskeletal health and biomechanics fields are well-known, respected, and appreciated by both the Lowcountry’s medical and academic communities. His love and life-long involvement with soccer and two decades of helping with the Cooper River Bridge Run are just two of his many non-academic community contributions. Dr. Barfield’s legacy is found in the many students he has educated and supported, and who are now improving and enriching lives in their chosen professional health and medical fields, which this scholarship—established for exercise science students in the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Department of Applied Exercise Science—proudly honors.

To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:

• Student must be a declared exercise science major
• Student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher

• Students who participate in intramural activities
• Adult Students
• Students with Veteran status

The Dr. Andrew and Josephine Lewis Endowed Scholarship was established to support and inspire students within the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s School of Health Sciences who demonstrate a commitment to service and professional growth. Dr. Andrew H. Lewis, Associate Professor Emeritus, dedicated over three decades to the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, serving in numerous leadership roles, including Department Chair, Associate Dean, and Director of Professional Development. A passionate educator and sport pedagogy specialist, Dr. Lewis has shaped future professionals through his deep belief in the transformative power of teaching and coaching.

His wife, Josephine, a former part-time student at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, shares his commitment to community through her professional work and volunteerism. With a background in medical coding and current employment at the Scientific Research Corporation, she has contributed her talents to several organizations through meaningful service. Together, the Lewises have modeled lives of educational excellence, professional dedication, and community engagement.

Their three children—Andrew Jr. (a U.S. Army Major and Senior Requirements Analyst), Adrian (an elementary science/math teacher), and Alexis (a pulmonary physician at the VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC)—reflect the couple’s values and commitment to lifelong learning and service.

Scholarship Requirements:

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

Preference is given in the following order:

• African American student majoring in Public Health
• African American student majoring in Exercise Science
• Any undergraduate student majoring within the School of Health Sciences

The Solomon Family Scholarship was established by Dr. Jason and Mrs. Jessica Solomon to honor Dr. A. Frederick Solomon (Dr. Jason’s father), and in memory of A. Bernard Solomon (Dr. Jason’s grandfather). The scholarship’s intended purpose is to continue the legacy that these two men lived by; that hard work, determination, and integrity are values that will provide for a successful life. These values set the standard and success for the Solomon family, and it's their hope that this scholarship may contribute to the recipient’s future success.

Both Dr. Jason and Mrs. Jessica Solomon attended the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø with Dr. Solomon graduating with a degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science in 2003. Dr. Jason Solomon then continued his studies at the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree in 2007. Mrs. Jessica Solomon furthered her education at Trident Technical College and graduated with a Dental Hygiene degree in 2005. Both joined Solomon Family Dentistry in 2007, and were married in 2011. Since then they have had two wonderful children: Liam (2013) and Katie (2015).

To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:

• Student is completing coursework in the School of Health Sciences at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø
• Student is a SC resident living in the tri-county area (Berkeley, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, or Dorchester County)
• Student is a junior or senior, having earned at least 60 credit hours toward their degree
• Student has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Preferences will be given to those who demonstrate the following attributes: 

• Students engaged at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and within the local community
• Students pursuing a career in dental medicine or health sciences graduate program

Beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, the Health Sciences Merit Scholarship will provide up to two awards annually to full-time students pursuing a degree within the School of Health Sciences.

To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:

• Be a full-time student enrolled in a major within the School of Health Sciences (Exercise Science, Public Health, or Health Services Administration and Management)
• Have completed a minimum of 9 credit hours of required coursework in their declared major
• Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Be an active member of the Public Health Society, Allied Health Alliance, or another health sciences-related student organization

In evaluating applicants, the scholarship committee will consider:

• Professional, college, and/or community involvement
• Any leadership roles held
• The student’s goals and commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of others through their future work

This scholarship reflects the School of Health Sciences’ dedication to supporting students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of others.

The School of Health Sciences awards two scholarships, up to $2,500 each, to support undergraduate Health Sciences majors (Exercise Science, Public Health, or Health Services Administration and Management) participating in a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø-sponsored study abroad program led by a Health Sciences faculty member. Awards may be granted for fall, spring, or summer travel.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Must be a declared Health Sciences major (full-time or part-time)
• Accepted into an approved CofC faculty-led study abroad program
• Have a cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Be in good academic standing
• Demonstrated financial need (priority given)
• Priority given to students traveling abroad for the first time

Application Requirements:

• Personal statement (500–1000 words) addressing:
  • Motivation and goals for studying abroad
  • Cultural engagement and personal growth
  • Leadership, extracurricular involvement, and commitment to diversity
• Two letters of recommendation from CofC faculty

Recipients may be invited to share their experiences at School of Health Sciences events or be featured on the school’s social media. These scholarships are NOT awarded through the CSAS portal and must be applied for using the link below.

Endowed by Dr. Rene Ravenel ('65) in honor of his father W. Jervey Ravenel, this scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior who has declared an intention to go to medical school.

First preference will be given to students from Berkeley or ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø counties.

• First preference shall be to a student who is a resident of South Carolina and a member of an under-represented group participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
• Second preference shall be to a student who is a resident of South Carolina who is participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
• Third preference shall be to a student who is participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

Established by Dr. Gary W. Thomas ’83 in memory of his father and mother. It is awarded to a rising junior or senior who is a member of the Pre-Medical Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta and plans a career in medicine.

Students enrolling in the College's MCAT Prep Course may be eligible to receive a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and books for the course.
