NOTE: All applications for school and departmental scholarships, with the exception of our study abroad scholarships, must be completed through the Cougar Scholarship Awarding System (CSAS).
Department of Public Health Sciences & Administration Scholarships

Dr. Deborah A. Miller Public Health Scholarship
The Deborah A. Miller Public Health Scholarship will be used to support one to two (1-2) full-time students pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Public Health within the Department of Public Health Sciences & Administration in the School of Health Sciences.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Student must have completed 60 hours, with a minimum of 45 hours completed at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
- Student must have completed a minimum of six (6) hours within the Department of Public Health Sciences & Administration at the College.
- Student must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.2.
- Student must complete a minimum of 75 documented hours of volunteer experience in a health-related field while at the College.
- Student may NOT be a double major.
Preferences will be given to:
- Non-traditional students (students 25 or older).
- Military personnel (Active/Reserve personnel, Retired, or Honorably Discharged).
- Students who have completed all their academic hours at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
NOTE: Recipients of the Dr. Deborah A. Miller Public Health Scholarship may NOT receive either of the Laura S. Griffin Scholarships in the same academic year.

Laura S. Griffin Service Scholarship
The Laura S. Griffin Service Scholarship was established by Geraldine B. Griffin in memory of her daughter, Ms. Laura Griffin. As the former Director of the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention at the College, Ms. Griffin was an avid believer in the concept of healthy lifestyles, a philosophy that she integrated into both her work and personal life. The last seven years of her life were dedicated to the same principles of healthy lifestyles, prevention of substance abuse, and pedestrian safety. Ms. Griffin passed away in 1996 as a result of a hit-and-run accident on the Battery. This scholarship celebrates her commitment to healthy living and her love of the College.
This scholarship will be used to support a full time student pursuing either a health promotion concentration or health promotion related degree.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Student must have completed 60 hours, with a minimum of 30 hours completed at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
- Student must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
Preferences will be given to:
- Student who has completed a minimum of 9 hours within the Department of Public Health Sciences & Administration.
- Student who has completed a minimum of 25 hours of volunteer experience in Substance Abuse Prevention while at the College.

Laura S. Griffin Health Educator Scholarship
The Laura S. Griffin Health Educator Scholarship was established by Geraldine B. Griffin in memory of her daughter, Ms. Laura Griffin. Joseph A. Tate Public Health Scholarship
Joseph A. Tate, a 2015 B.A. in Public Health graduate, and the Marketing and Events Coordinator in the former School of Education, Health, and Human Performance, died suddenly in April 2017.
This scholarship was funded by family and friends so that Joe’s legacy at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø would be remembered and carried on.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Student must be a declared B.S. or B.A. Public Health major.
- Student must be an active member of the Public Health Society for at least one year.
- Student must show financial need.
- Student must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
- Student must have a junior or senior standing.
School of Health Sciences Scholarships

Dr. Andrew & Josephine Lewis Endowed Annual Scholarship
The Dr. Andrew and Josephine Lewis Endowed Scholarship was established to support and inspire students within the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s School of Health Sciences who demonstrate a commitment to service and professional growth. Dr. Andrew H. Lewis, Associate Professor Emeritus, dedicated over three decades to the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, serving in numerous leadership roles, including Department Chair, Associate Dean, and Director of Professional Development. A passionate educator and sport pedagogy specialist, Dr. Lewis has shaped future professionals through his deep belief in the transformative power of teaching and coaching.
His wife, Josephine, a former part-time student at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, shares his commitment to community through her professional work and volunteerism. With a background in medical coding and current employment at the Scientific Research Corporation, she has contributed her talents to several organizations through meaningful service. Together, the Lewises have modeled lives of educational excellence, professional dedication, and community engagement.
Their three children—Andrew Jr. (a U.S. Army Major and Senior Requirements Analyst), Adrian (an elementary science/math teacher), and Alexis (a pulmonary physician at the VA Medical Center in Columbia, SC)—reflect the couple’s values and commitment to lifelong learning and service.
Scholarship Requirements:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Preference is given in the following order:
- African American student majoring in Public Health
- African American student majoring in Exercise Science
- Any undergraduate student majoring within the School of Health Sciences

Solomon Family Scholarship
The Solomon Family Scholarship was established by Dr. Jason and Mrs. Jessica Solomon to honor Dr. A. Frederick Solomon (Dr. Jason’s father), and in memory of A. Bernard Solomon (Dr. Jason’s grandfather). The scholarship’s intended purpose is to continue the legacy that these two men lived by, and that is that hard work, determination, and integrity are values that will provide for a successful life. These values set the standard and success for the Solomon family, and it's their hope that this scholarship may contribute to the recipient’s future success.
Both Dr. Jason and Mrs. Jessica Solomon attended the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø with Dr. Solomon graduating with a degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science in 2003. Dr. Jason Solomon then continued his studies at the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree in 2007. Mrs. Jessica Solomon furthered her education at Trident Technical College and graduated with a Dental Hygiene degree in 2005. Both joined Solomon Family Dentistry in 2007, and were married in 2011. Since then they have had two wonderful children: Liam (2013) and Katie (2015).
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Student is completing coursework in the School of Health Sciences at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø
- Student is a SC resident living in the tri-county area (Berkeley, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, or Dorchester County)
- Student is a junior or senior, having earned at least 60 credit hours toward their degree
- Student has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Preferences will be given to those who demonstrate the following attributes:
- Students engaged at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and within the local community
- Students pursuing a career in dental medicine or health sciences graduate program

Health Sciences Merit Scholarship
Beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year, the Health Sciences Merit Scholarship will provide up to two awards annually to full-time students pursuing a degree within the School of Health Sciences.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be a full-time student enrolled in a major within the School of Health Sciences (Exercise Science, Public Health, or Health Services Administration and Management)
- Have completed a minimum of 9 credit hours of required coursework in their declared major
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be an active member of the Public Health Society, Allied Health Alliance, or another health sciences-related student organization
In evaluating applicants, the scholarship committee will consider:
- Professional, college, and/or community involvement
- Any leadership roles held
- The student’s goals and commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of others through their future work
This scholarship reflects the School of Health Sciences’ dedication to supporting students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of others.

School of Health Sciences Study Abroad Scholarship
The School of Health Sciences awards two scholarships, up to $2,500 each, to support undergraduate Health Sciences majors (Exercise Science, Public Health, or Health Services Administration and Management) participating in a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø-sponsored study abroad program led by a Health Sciences faculty member. Awards may be granted for fall, spring, or summer travel.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a declared Health Sciences major (full-time or part-time)
- Accepted into an approved CofC faculty-led study abroad program
- Have a cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be in good academic standing
- Demonstrated financial need (priority given)
- Priority given to students traveling abroad for the first time
Application Requirements:
- Personal statement (500–1000 words) addressing:
- Motivation and goals for studying abroad
- Cultural engagement and personal growth
- Leadership, extracurricular involvement, and commitment to diversity
- Two letters of recommendation from CofC faculty
Recipients may be invited to share their experiences at School of Health Sciences events or be featured on the school’s social media. These scholarships are NOT awarded through the CSAS portal and must be applied for using the link below.

W. Jervey Ravenel Memorial Scholarship
Endowed by Dr. Rene Ravenel ('65) in honor of his father W. Jervey Ravenel, this scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior who has declared an intention to go to medical school.
First preference will be given to students from Berkeley or ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø counties.

Dr. Rene Ravenel Endowed Scholarship
Created by Eva Ravenel in memory of Dr. Rene Ravenel '65 this scholarship is awarded as follows:
- First preference shall be to a student who is a resident of South Carolina and a member of an under-represented group participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
- Second preference shall be to a student who is a resident of South Carolina who is participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
- Third preference shall be to a student who is participating in a pre-professional health program at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

J. Gorman & Gladys Thomas Endowed Memorial Alumni Scholarship
Established by Dr. Gary W. Thomas ’83 in memory of his father and mother. It is awarded to a rising junior or senior who is a member of the Pre-Medical Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta and plans a career in medicine.

MCAT Prep Scholarship
Students enrolling in the College's MCAT Prep Course may be eligible to receive a scholarship to cover the cost of tuition and books for the course.
