Events and Community Engagement

The Department of Computer Science regularly hosts, supports, and contributes to projects, symposia, workshops, and conferences.

Events

  • Alumni Symposium: An annual event, held in March, featuring Department of Computer Science alumni engaging and networking with current students. Several alumni are invited annually to present and host a Q&A session.

  • BizBash: Held in the fall semester, the afternoon after the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Career Fair, recruiters are invited to network with students and alumni seeking potential employment.

  • : As a registered site for the annual Global Game Jam, the CS department offers both ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students and the broader ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community the opportunity to stretch their creativity, coding and collaboration skills by creating a fully original game in just 48 hours.

  • Harbor Walk After Five: An annual event concluding the spring semester senior capstone projects with industry projects presentations.

  • : An annual programming competition for high school students, held in February, that participating teams solve problems and introduce their solution utilizing Python and Java.

  • : An annual contest for teams of two or three students involving algorithmic programming problems. Regional competition site host.

  • : A five day pre-college program for rising 10, 11 and 12 graders to sample a range of STEM disciplines.

  • :  An annual event, held in November and presented by the School of Engineering, Computing, and Mathematics, Lowcountry Hall of Science and Math, and the Lady Cougars Basketball team, where middle school students experience hands-on activities and demonstrations related to science, technology, engineering and math.

Open Source Software Development

  •  - Open-source development projects:
    •  - CIRDLES' flagship data-processing and workflow automation software for geochronologists.
    •  - Middleware for Assisting with the Registration of Samples - prototypes an automated approach for use with .
    •  - Data processing software for SHRIMP mass spectrometers sponsored by Geoscience Australia
    •  - Community-driven replacement for Isoplot.
    •  - Imports mass spectrometer raw data files and supports their interactive review.  
  •  - Open source environment for music making and creative programming activities.

CS hosts Carolinas Women in Computing

In winter of 2025 the department of Computer Science hosted the 2025 Carolinas Women in Computing (CWIC) conference. The events included workshops, guest speakers, career fair, panel discussion, and a research poster competition. The ACM-W community came together to network, exchange knowledge, and form lasting connections. The CWIC planning committee was chaired by our own Dr. Mia Wang with co-chair Dr. Qian Zhang (Engineering)
