Summer: EDPD 826 Y - The Struggle for Equal Education in South Carolina
EDPD 826 Y: The Struggle for Equal Education in South Carolina. Online June 8 – August 10, 2025.
Today’s public schools in South Carolina are primarily the result of past laws and court decisions. The journey has been marked with struggle and, in some cases, violence. This course aims to give teachers an understanding of the past so they can relate to the schools we have today.
This course is designed for classroom teachers, administrators, and others interested in learning the history of the segregation and integration of public schools in South Carolina. Topics include schooling during the colonial period and reconstruction, Jim Crow laws, the fight for desegregation with the Clarendon County Briggs v. Elliott case, school equalization, the Brown v. Board of Education decision, university desegregation, court-ordered desegregation, the aftermath of forced integration, and where we are today.
This online course comprises nine sessions. Beginning on June 8, participants will be emailed a detailed assignment, which includes a written lecture on the topic, numerous websites to visit and read, textbook pages to read, and an application assignment. After completing the session and submitting the assignment by email, the instructor will evaluate the assignment and assign a grade. The next session will accompany the response. This approach allows participants to work at their own pace and allows time for vacations or other activities. This procedure will be repeated until all assignments have been completed. The last assignment is due by August 10.
Registration: EDPD 826 Y: The Struggle of Equal Education in South Carolina class size is limited to 30 participants. The cost for the three hours of graduate professional development credit through the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø is $350.
