Fall 2025

Vincent Geloso

Vincent Geloso - Assistant Professor of Economics at George Mason University

"The First Egalitarian Enrichment"

Thursday, October 16, 2025 | 6:00 PM | Septima Clark Auditorium

The common belief is that America had a "Gilded Age" of rising inequality between 1870 and 1910 and it was progressive eras policies that leveled inequalities starting in the 1910s. This is wrong. Inequality fell between 1870 and 1910 at a continuous pace and the share of income going to the bottom 90% increased continually. The pace of "absolute" improvements was exceptionally underappreciated pre-1910 because of data issues. This is why we need to call the period from 1870 to 1940 the first Egalitarian Enrichment.

Vincent Geloso is an Assistant Professor of Economics at George Mason University. He held prior appointments at Texas Tech University, Bates College and King’s University College. Mr Geloso holds a PhD in economic history from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a master’s degree in economic history from the same institution. He has published more than 100 scientific articles in journals such as Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, Research Policy, European Journal of Political Economy, Public Choice, Economics & Human Biology, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Contemporary Economic Policy, and the British Medical Journal: Global Health. He is also associate editor at Structural Change and Economic Dynamics and Essays in Economic and Business History.

Magatte Wade

Spaulding Speaker Series: Magatte Wade - Entrepreneur, African prosperity activist, and author of The Heart of a Cheetah

Wednesday, September 24, 2025 | 6:00 PM | Wells Fargo Auditorium

The Center is partnering with the Student Success Center to bring Magette Wade to campus on Wednesday, September 24th, at 6 PM at the Wells Fargo Auditorium.

Wade is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur dedicated to unlocking prosperity in Africa. She was born in Senegal and raised in France, but never stopped asking herself, “Why are some countries poor while others are rich?”

Wade has founded businesses in Senegal and Silicon Valley. She supports free markets and economic freedom. She believes both are the “pathway” for Africa to improve its business environment, overcome poverty, tackle social issues, and raise its educational bar. Her book “The Heart of a Cheetah” explores these ideas.

Wade’s talk is a Spaulding Speaker event. CofC administrators, staff, professors, students, and the public are all invited to attend.
