Emergency Medical Services

About Emergency Medical Services at the College.

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Emergency Medical Service exists for the purpose of providing emergency medical care and transport, without charge, to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community.

Established in 1995, the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø EMS began as the vision of a lone first responder recognizing the need to assist ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø County EMS in providing emergency medical coverage to the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø campus. In 2010 the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Fire and EMS became the first volunteer campus EMS organization to be licensed by SC DHEC as an EMT First Response organization. Ambulance 1702 Image

During the Summer of 2011 the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø EMS obtained an ambulance from the Medical University of South Carolina and earned licensure as a transporting Ambulance Service with SC DHEC. Basic-level transportation is now provided free of charge to all ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students, faculty, and staff. CofC EMS works closely alongside ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø County EMS, providing mutual aid in the downtown area when requested.

At present, the unit is comprised of student volunteers certified as South Carolina EMT-Basics. CofC EMS volunteers are in service from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., seven days a week. Daytime campus EMS coverage is provided by other CofC staff members who are also certified at the EMT-B level. ALS back-up is provided by ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø County EMS as necessary.

In addition to providing medical care, the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø EMS is also involved in several campus initiatives, including being heavily involved in the placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the campus and teaching CPR classes on campus.
