French Language Placement

When taking French, you are typically placed in a language class based on years of prior high school language instruction.

QUICK GUIDE TO FRENCH PLACEMENT

0-1 years of high school French = placement in FREN 101 (Beginning French Through Culture I)

2 years of high school French = placement in FREN 102 (Beginning French Through Culture II)

3 years of high school French = placement in FREN 201 (Intermediate French Through Culture I)

4 years of high school French = placement in FREN 202 (Intermediate French Through Culture II)

equivalent 5 years of high school French = placement in FREN 313 (French Composition in Cultural Contexts)

Placement OUT OF the foreign Languages General Education Requirement

Placement into FREN 313 does not in itself fulfill the foreign language General Education requirement at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. You may request a proficiency exam if you place into FREN 313 and seek to complete your foreign language General Education requirement.

You may request a placement interview if you are a native or heritage speaker of French and wish to be exempted from the foreign language General Education requirement.

Placement at a higher level than the QuiCK-GUIDE Recommendations

You may request a placement interview if you believe that you should be placed into a higher level than recommended by the number of years you have studied French.

You may request a placement interview if you are a native or heritage speaker of French and wish to continue taking French and Francophone Studies, even if exempted from the foreign language General Education requirement.
